I’m a well-read, cultured, physically fit, politically and socially liberal older woman who’s been obsessed with romance all my life. I love classic romances (Jane Austen, the Brontës) as well as popular romance, and unlike most professors, I love reality TV. Why? I’m fascinated by the social psychology of Survivor or Big Brother, and the emotional dynamics in Married at First Sight or Love is Blind. But actually, I just enjoy watching the way relationships grow and unspool on the screen, as well as in life. And I enjoyed writing about my own path through the relationship wilderness in my new book LOVELAND. I love pleasure: the pleasures of reading, of writing, of teaching, of fulfilling passionate desires…like my desire for fine chocolate. What else did you think I meant?
